Soot Formation

         

Probe Sample/SMPS characterization of Particle Size Distribution Function

Soot is generated from a premixed flat flame.  Particles are drawn into the sampling probe and nearly instantaneously diluted.  A small sample is introduced into SMPS for particle sizing and number density measurement.

       

Small Angle Neutron Scattering

Scattering intensity is detected by neutron scattering at small angles.  The intensity may be inverted to yield soot particle number density

                   

Atomic Force Microscopy allows us to examine the morphology of nascent soot particles upon impact with the mica surface.
